However, despite the percentage drop from last year’s sales, both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are selling at a rapid pace overall, for their sales put together are “40 percent higher than the combined 23 month totals for PS3 and 360.” While no exact sales figures have been released at the time of writing, Sony wished to thank its fans for the PS4’s market supremacy, saying:

Microsoft also responded with a statement to the NPD Group’s report, saying that “Xbox One continued to see strong momentum in September” for “solid year-over-year growth” in sales of the console. However, Microsoft’s current-gen system is still lagging behind in a big way, for according to the industry research firm VGChartz, PS4 has sold nearly 25.5 million units, while Xbox One trails behind at 13.9 million sold.

Considering the two figures from the previous paragraph, it’s no wonder why Xbox head Phil Spencer recently admitted that he was unsure if the Xbox could ever catch up to the PS4. For starters, Microsoft’s console is getting utterly trounced overseas in one of the planet’s largest gaming markets, as Japan sales for the Xbox One are floundering at best. And as far as statistics for the United States go, PlayStation 4 was only trumped in transactions once during 2015, and that was by the Xbox One’s sales in April.

Thanks to the PS4’s massive market numbers, the console’s sales are helping Sony’s lagging profits, as the Japanese multinational continues to recover from stagnant growth in recent years. And with several highly anticipated exclusive titles slated for next year, as well as the console’s recent price drop in North America, the PlayStation 4 should continue to do swimmingly in terms of revenue.

The PlayStation 4’s next major exclusive release will be Naughty Dog’s Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and it is set to drop on March 18, 2016.
