It’s estimated that the PS4 will surpass both Nintendo Wii and the Original PlayStation’s number by the end of this year. However, the chances of touching PlayStation 2’s 155-million mark look bleak. After all, the PlayStation 5 is also expected to launch in 2020 which will definitely dampen the PS4’s sales momentum.

However, even at a declining pace, PS4 should surpass the Wii numbers easily. Assuming the PS4 keeps selling at a slower pace even after the release of next-gen PlayStation 5, then it may even exceed the original PlayStation making it the company’s second most successful console of all time.
Apart from the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch has been selling at a steady pace with nearly 34 million units sold within two years of its release. If the Switch keeps its sales momentum, then this could be the very first generation with two different “100 million units selling” consoles. Xbox One, on the other hand, has not been able to catch up with PS4’s success, and it’s estimated that Xbox One has only been able to sell 42 million units which is less than half the number of PS4 units sold. However, Microsoft stopped publishing sales figures for the system, so there are no official numbers.
Sony also revealed some other numbers. PlayStation network generated nearly $13 billion in revenue during the last fiscal year, which is also a new record. PS Plus has almost 36.5 million subscribers, and PlayStation Now has more than 700,000 active subscribers. Could the PS4 hit another milestone in terms of sales? We will find out in the coming months.
