According to Daniel Ahmad, a reliable source for all things video games and a senior analyst at Niko Partners, Sony has a first party trailer in the works for this week. Ahmad made the claim on the ResetEra forums rather casually in a thread about Sony First Party Studios.
PlayStation fans were expressing excitement over the hire of Mike Ellis as Design Manager at Sony Santa Monica (God of War) and considered making a new forum thread to discuss his resume and prior work. A few commenters were going back and forth over what to title the thread when Ahmad chimed in out of nowhere with, “Sony PlayStation: First Party Studios |OT5| Trailer Next Week.”
So while Sony may not be at E3 2019 or holding a press conference this year, it does appear that the company will have some news for fans around the annual gaming event. But the question is what first party studio will be releasing a new trailer, as there are several strong candidates.
Obviously, The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima were big highlights from Sony’s presentation last year and fans would love to see more from those games. We know that Last of Us 2 developer Naughty Dog wrapped up motion capture work not that long ago, so it’s possible that the studio could put together a new trailer for players to analyze. Ghost of Tsushima is less likely considering it isn’t as far along in development as The Last of Us 2 and might not be ready for the trailer treatment.
Another candidate that skirts around the First Party line is Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding. This weekend, Kojima tweeted out a cryptic Death Stranding video that featured clips within a hand silhouette, which might be part of a longer (and full frame) trailer. But is Kojima a first party studio? That’s up for debate, but Death Stranding is a PS4 exclusive.
Whatever the reveal is eventually for, the good news is that PlayStation fans have something to look forward to even though PlayStation is skipping E3. Perhaps Sony might even hold a State of Play stream in the next two weeks to try and steal some of the attention away.
