The update only came to mainstream notice when a Reddit user realized that the DualShock 4 controller suddenly functioned after a firmware update, though the PlayStation 3 simply recognizes it as a generic bluetooth device, limiting its functionality by disabling vibration and motion input features. Still, the DS4 controller is a superior specimen compared to the DS3, and functionality may receive further improvements in the future.

With colored Dualshock 4 controllers coming to the market soon, it’s clear that Sony is expecting a bump in sales for their official controllers. On a more general level, Sony has faith that the PlayStation 4 will eventually garner more profits than than even the mighty PlayStation 2, and updates like this only help the PS4 and its peripherals to become even more useful.

To utilize the controller, Reddit user shafiggy16 has stated some simple instructions to follow, since it involves more than simply pressing the PlayStation button and sitting back:

Under “Accessory Settings”, select “Manage Bluetooth Devices” Select “Register New Device” then start scanning While the PS3 is scanning, press and hold the share button and PS button on the DS4 at the same time until it starts blinking The PS3 should then see the controller from there. The DS4 is going to show up as a “Wireless Controller” Once selected, the registration is complete Pressing the PS button on the DS4 now will turn the controller on, the LED will light up white while it’s on

Gamers eager to utilize their DS4 controllers should take note that other users are reporting that not all games will work with the newer controllers, so determining which games will be compatible seems to be a trial-and-error affair until there’s some sort of officially supported list.

Still use your PS3? Hoping to completely replace DualShock 3s with their successors?
