Halloween may just be one day in October, but for some, the entire month represents the “spooky season.” It’s a time for pumpkins, generally creepy stuff, visits to Spirit Halloween, horror movies, and of course, horror games. Yet, for one reason or another, PS Plus has not really celebrated for the past two years, despite the flak it received last year and its competitors being rather consistent here.

The PS Plus Free Games for October 2022 Forget the Season

Xbox Game Pass, for example, is adding three games in October 2022 all befitting the season, and that’s with several games not out yet. Scorn, A Plague Tale: Requiem, and Signalis all approach horror in different ways, but all fit the season well. Meanwhile, the Epic Games Store’s first two free games for October include Rising Hell and Slain: Back From Hell. Neither are really horror games, but the hell-focused, gothic approach here is one way to celebrate the season.

But if PS Plus was the only way to tell Halloween is celebrated in October, no one would clearly realize it. Not a single one of the games is remotely related to Halloween. What’s worse is that Sony has always been inconsistent in the matter. The PS Plus free games for October 2020 did include Vampyr, which is a nice nod, but October 2021 basically teased fans with it. The three games then were PGA Tour 2K21, Hell Let Loose, and Mortal Kombat X. The first is a golf game, the second is a WW2 game, and the third is a brutal fighter. Mortal Kombat X came close to being a Halloween game, as its DLC is largely focused on Horror culture entities, but the DLC was not included. PS Plus did not celebrate Halloween last year, and as of this writing, it does not seem to be celebrating it this year.

The PS Plus free games may be a bust, but there is a chance Sony redeems itself with the PS Plus Extra and Premium games for October 2022. This is usually its widest selection, and there are plenty of horror games across the platforms it carries. There’s certainly a game for the PS Plus Extra and Premium games for October 2022 to add Dino Crisis or something like it, but fans will just have to wait and see if Sony is ignoring the season in full or just not celebrating with its free selection. It’s expected to reveal these new games in two weeks or so.
