Because of the expanded service, PS Plus’ December 2022 was always going to be better than December 2021. That’s a safe bet, even if the PS Plus Extra and Premium games have yet to be announced. But in a direct comparison of PS Plus free December 2022 selection to December 2021, it’s not only clear that Sony is giving away double the number of games but keeps the strong, varied appeal it’s known for.

PS Plus Free Games for December 2022 Gives Fans Five Games

The PS Plus free games for December 2022 include Mass Effect: Legendary Edition (which includes remastered, improved versions of Mass Effect 1, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3), Biomutant, and DKO: Divine Knockout. Mass Effect is an amazing IP to end the year with, while the others are not lackluster but instead varied. DKO: Divine Knockout is a title many fans may not have heard of before, but it is a platforming fighting game. PS Plus is a big boon for lesser-known multiplayer games as it provides that instant community who check it out just because it’s there. DKO might not make the same waves as Rocket League, Fall Guys, or Deep Rock Galactic, but it still reaps the benefits nonetheless. Biomutant, meanwhile, is a second chance for the action RPG to impress PlayStation players. Its launch was severely undermined by a host of technical issues, but with those mostly out of the way now, fans may find something they can thoroughly enjoy.

Indeed, PS Plus ends 2022 with a selection of five games, three of which are among the best the industry has to offer, an audience-building multiplayer release, and a second chance at redemption for a once highly-anticipated game. It’s a strong ending that bodes well for PS Plus free games in January 2023 and the tone of the tier next year.

PS Plus Free Games for December 201 Gave Fans 2.5 Games

But the success of the PS Plus free games this month comes in stronger because of how December 2021 came to an end. One can argue that LEGO DC Super Villains and Mortal Shell are on par, if not better than, Biomutant and Divine Knockout, and that would be true. But the headliner is often the big draw, and the headliner here drew nothing but controversy. Godfall reviews set it up as a mediocre game, one that would only exist in the shadow of any Mass Effect game (though that could be said of a plethora of games). It’s not necessarily the quantity or quality here that makes it worse; it’s the “completeness” of it, or lack thereof.

It wasn’t Godfall fans got on PS Plus, but Godfall: Challenger Edition which was a watered-down version of the game, a “cut-price limited feature edition” that basically gave fans endgame content and nothing more. A looter where loot is given, not earned, even to head into endgame content to earn it left a sour taste in many mouths, especially because, again, it was not a full game. But the past is in the past, and Sony is now looking to the future. Seeing as how December 2021 was headlined by half a game, but December 2022 is headlined by three games, it seems safe to say lesson learned.

PS Plus subscribers get a handful of games every month.
