What’s most impressive is that the machine will allegedly be able to hit 4K resolution while running existing, slightly-upgraded Xbox One titles like Forza Motorsport 6 (which is featured in screenshot form in Digital Foundry’s breakdown) at an impressive 60 frames per second. This was the subject of much debate amongst gamers following Phil Spencer, the head of Xbox, and his comments pertaining to how Project Scorpio would render games in 4K. According to Digital Foundry, these claims are legitimate.

A quick breakdown of the specs for Project Scorpio can be found below:

Based on the above information, Project Scorpio is set to be a powerhouse when compared to existing gaming consoles on the market. The PlayStation 4 Pro in particular won’t be able to hold a metaphorical candle to the tech, and apparently Microsoft’s system isn’t all that far away from release either. Development of Project Scorpio is said to be ahead of schedule and could arrive within the next six months, according to Eurogamer.

GPU: 40 customised compute units at 1172MHz

Memory: 12GB GDDR5

Memory Bandwidth: 326GB/s

Harddrive: 1TB 2.5-inch

Optical Drive: 4K UHD Blu-ray

It’ll be interesting to see how developers make use of the high-power technology, especially with blockbuster titles like Middle-earth: Shadow of War being developed with Project Scorpio in mind. Ultimately, the games that benefit from the power will act as selling points for the hardware, and it sounds as if the company is hard at work to ensure that it has support from all of its biggest third-party partners.

Now, if only fans could be given a look at Red Dead Redemption 2 running at 4K on Scorpio sooner rather than later.

Project Scorpio is set to arrive at some point in 2017.
