While the Xbox 360 and PC and PlayStation 3 will get a sequel, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 (check out the awesome teaser trailer) we can now confirm that the follow-up will not be ported to the Wii U.

Producer Dave Cox, when asked if there would be a Wii U version of the game, posted on Twitter stating:

It is unclear why Konami would all of a sudden pull out the rug from under Nintendo’s feet after offering such great third party support in the past. The only Castelvania installment currently slated for release on a Nintendo device is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow- Mirror of Fate for the 3DS (it’s due March 5th) - which takes place 25 years after the original and pits Trevor Belmont in a showdown against his father (who has become Dracula). Castlevania appeared on the Wii in the form of Castlevania Judgement - with some punching and kicking thrown into the mix. Unfortunately, it was a bad combination and received poor reviews.

Despite the apparent failure of Castlevania Judgement, without a more insightful reason from Cox, it is hard to know exactly why Konami isn’t interested in a Wii U port. That said, with the new console performing below Nintendo’s expectation, it’s possible that the studio is simply waiting to see how the hardware performs longterm before risking costly development on a port - a cautious “wait and see” move that Crytek used to explain the lack of Crysis 3 on the Wii U. Not to mention the Wii U includes specific design challenges (touch screen functionality, motion controls, etc) that don’t require the same consideration on Sony or Microsoft’s current systems.

Longtime Nintendo Castlevania players can look forward to vampire slaying on the 3DS. However, for the time being, Wii U owners will have to settle for reuniting with the Belmont clan via classic titles from the NES and SNES eras as Virtual Console downloads.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 currently has no release date but should be available on the PS3 and Xbox 360.
